All of our guests arrive at Palmo di Terra with the best intentions, maps, and travel guides of the area, trying to make sure not to miss any of the Maremma amenities. Then, once our guests get used to the quiet rhythms of our farmhouse, most of them get lazy and end up spending the whole day relaxing at the swimming pool and in the garden or walking in the countryside near the house.

It is worth, instead, to get out for some day trips. The Argentario Islands deserve a visit, especially in the spring and summer: Giglio and Giannutri are relatively close. Many Toremar and Mare Giglio ferryboats leave every day from Porto Santo Stefano, 20 km from Palmo di Terra. You can also have a mini-cruise.

The island of Giglio is mostly hilly, except for the top of it, Poggio della Pagana, that is almost 500 meters above sea level. You can rent a boat at the Port of Giglio to tour the island, 27 km of rocks and small inlets, except for the long Campese beach and other smaller beaches, such as Arenella, Caldane, and Cannelle, all of which are located on the eastern side of the island.

The island of Giglio is one of the most favorite destinations for scuba divers, but also for those who love trekking since there are many countryside paths heading to Giglio Castello.

As to Giannutri, the island lacks sandy beaches and is surrounded by rocks and pebble inlets. It is approximately 3 km. long and more than 500 meters wide. It can be reached daily in the summer with ferryboats or private boats from two places: Spalmatoio Bay, towards the South-East, and Maestra Bay towards the North-West. Remains of a Roman villa can be seen. The island belongs to the CampesePark of the Tuscan Archipelago. You can rent small private accommodations, most of which are located near Spalmatoio Bay, while hotels do not exist.

In the southern part of the island, the Park’s strict rules prevent ships from getting close to the coast. 

Most of the seabed is protected for fish restocking, but scuba-diving lovers do have some good spots at Spalmatoio Bay.
